Commission launches voluntary lobby register
The European Commission launched, on 23 June, for a one-year trial period, its public register for lobbyists present in Brussels. Administrative Affairs, Audit and Anti-Fraud Commissioner Siim Kallas defends the voluntary approach, which for him is less bureaucratic than a binding legislation. All organisations engaged in influencing the policy formulation and decision-making processes of the European institutions are invited to register. When registering, they will be asked to disclose some information to enhance the transparency of the relations between lobbies and the Commission.
