The ERA‐NET co-fund action GeoERA “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe (GeoERA)” will be launched on the 17-18 January 2017 in Utrecht, Netherlands. The key objective of GeoERA is to deliver integrated information on pan-European level on geo-energy, groundwater and mineral raw material resources. GeoERA is coordinated by the Geological Survey of Netherlands, (TNO) and supported by a consortium of 45 partner organisations, both national and regional GSOs, qualifying as programme managers and/or owners, from over 30 countries. The kick-off meeting, organized by the GeoERA Call  Secretariat, will present the programme, its governance, procedures and requirements and will offer an occasion for "Project ideas market".

The Mediterranean is a vast area with a long geological history composed of different sedimentary basins and different tectonic settings. Despite geological complexities, several very large hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in clastic and carbonate reservoirs that span in age from Triassic to Pleistocene.

Recently in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, impressive gas discoveries have been made: Tamar (2009), Leviathan (2010), Aphrodite (2011) and, most recently, Zohr (2015). Overall, the exploration activity has been intermittent and often focused in very limited portions of the basin.

A large part of the Mediterranean is underexplored and the use of new seismic acquisition and drilling technologies together with recent discoveries in new plays have revitalised interest in the entire area.

This conference aims in bringing together players in the area to share experiences and understanding of the petroleum systems and new ideas to overcome the challenges that are still present in the region and to unlock further hydrocarbon potential.

The prime objective of the 25th session of the Committee is to explore how to deliver on the national commitments in support of the Sustainable Development Goals and to discuss potential solutions to be agreed at an energy ministerial at the outset of the Eighth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development in Astana, Kazakhstan, on 11 June 2017.

On 28-30 September 2016 the Committee on Sustainable Energy engaged in a dialogue on concrete actions in the nexus area with environment and climate. The session provided an opportunity to discuss national action plans and holistic energy policy making, especially in the context of the role of fossil fuels in future sustainable energy systems. The Committee considered the proposal by the Governments of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan to endorse the concept and the process to lead to a ministerial outcome document (ECE/ENERGY/2016/9) and to optimize impact requested an informal, public, on-line consultations process.

The Committee on Sustainable Energy is invited to participate in the consultation process and to join the resumed session on 19 January 2017, which will conclude the considerations of Agenda items VI, IX and XII.

The EFG/UNECE Conference will focus on "International cooperation on natural resources: geoscientists’ contribution to enhanced governance, policy making and attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals". This conference will foster the convergence of terminology and the comparability/compatibility of data, thus contributing to the creation of a solid European Knowledge Database on mineral and energy resources. Such harmonization is equally important to government policymakers and to companies and regulators within the energy and minerals industries, including the users and providers of data on energy and minerals reserves and resources and renewable energy. UNFC will be reviewed, including its potential for application in Europe and beyond and its relationship with other classification and public reporting systems.

The fight against global warming took a major step forward since November 4th, with the Paris Climate Agreement coming into force, and it is now time for signatory countries to move from words to deeds.
Thanks to its energy and climate policy measures taken so far, the European Union has been a forerunner on these topics, and the current agenda of the European Commission offers a wealth of new ambitious initiatives to go forward.
2017 will be therefore decisive for the EU institutions, the national authorities and the industry to turn those objectives into concrete policy actions and the 3rd EU Energy Summit will be an excellent opportunity to discuss the very recent EU initiatives and their impact on the energy market and to debate how the EU could encourage and support the efforts required from the European economic and social actors to face major challenges: innovative technologies to boost decarbonisation and energy efficiency, new electricity market design and integration of renewable energy, mobilisation of public and private capital, promotion of smart cities and consumers’ empowerment, widening and strengthening of the energy systems’ resilience, etc.

RocExs 2017 is organised on behalf of the Rockfall Expert Network (RocExs.NET) and the Joint Technical Committee of the ISSMFE, ISRM and IAEG (JTC-1) by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC).

Rockfalls are frequent and damaging hazard in mountainous regions and coastal cliffs. They are also frequent in cut slopes of the transportation corridors, in quarries and other excavations. Significant progress has been achieved in the last decades, particularly in the characterization of the rock masses at the potential rockfall sources, in detecting premonitory instability features and monitoring of displacements, in the rockfall modelling and in the design of both protective and stabilization measures. The analysis and management of the rockfall hazard and risk often requires a multidisciplinary approach. The aim of the workshop is to bring together earth scientists, engineers, practitioners, decision makers and end-users, in order to discuss and evaluate new methods, models and approaches for the analysis and management of the rockfalls that have been recently developed.

The National Data Repository Work Group meetings are held regularly as a platform for member countries and companies from around the world to meet and discuss topics and issues unique to the area of data management for national repositories. Each meeting provides insight into the latest technologies, standards and best practices as well as providing a forum for networking and sharing of ideas with your international peers. This will be the 13th meeting of government regulators, petroleum industry experts and others to discuss the collection and storage of increasing volumes of data associated with oil and gas exploration and production around the world. Regulators have long realized that collecting and storing data is not a competitive activity. Collaborating on business processes, such as data quality, and the related standards for data exchange can deliver real benefits and costs savings. The "DIRECTIVE 2007/2/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL establishing an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community ", better known as INSPIRE, celebrates this year the 10th anniversary of its entry into force. A decade of implementation efforts by the EU, EFTA/EEA and Candidate Accession Countries is resulting in a growing online availability of a wide range of spatial data. This data is not only put to use for protecting the environment. It also finds its  application in many activities in our digital society related to e-Government, transport, agriculture, navigation, regional development, energy, health, safety & security, research  and e-Commerce just to name a few. Environmental issues do not stop at borders and neither does the Digital Single Market where spatial data should be able to flow without obstacles to fully reach its potential for sustainable growth. The INSPIRE 2017 conference is organized by the governments of Germany and France, in partnership with the European Commission  and they want to emphasize the importance of working together across borders, and across policy and economic sectors to make sharing of spatial data even more a reality for the wider benefit of our citizens, businesses and environment. At the INSPIRE Conference 2017 more than 1.000 participants – policy makers, public and private sector users and producers of data, services and application, INSPIRE experts and students - are expected from all EU countries and beyond to learn, demonstrate, network  and generally contribute to the debate and implementation of INSPIRE. The conference will offer two days of workshops and three days of plenaries, thematic sessions, a poster session, a commercial exhibition and social events.

The main objective of this mineral prospectivity contest is to encourage discussion and contacts between researchers of the mineral prospectivity scientific community. This will be achieved through the realization of predictive maps by all interested participants, using the methodology of their choice, but on a unique case study (same area, same targeted commodity, same dataset for all participants).

During the conference, resulting maps will be displayed, evaluated and compared, and methodologies will be discussed. Best predictive maps (in terms of performance) will be awarded during the conference. This will certainly trigger fruitful discussion and hopefully foster interactions and future collaborations within the scientific community.
