President of the Republic of Slovenia visited the Geological Survey

President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, visited the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) on January 13th, 2009. The director - Dr Marko Komac and the team of experts of GeoZS, introduced Dr Türk to the major activities of the Geological Survey, especially the projects dealing with energy crisis, climate change and environmental issues. Dr Komac stressed that geology plays a critical role in these areas, as a science tackling all these issues in a holistic approach for the benefit of Slovenian and European society. In addition Dr Komac explained that geology represents a non exchangeable sequence of activities without which there would not be possible to provide to the society such commodities and services as: potable, mineral or thermal water, underground gas storage, minerals supply, health protection due to geosphere contamination and protection of the society against geohazards. President discussed with the experts further possibilities for development of the underground gas storage locations and future energy challenges for Slovenia. Other discussed issues were: drinking water, geothermal potential and geological mapping in Slovenia. More information in Slovene language is available at the following website.
