Press release on the European Commission proposal for a Directive on the promotion of the use of renewable energy sources
On January 23rd, 2008 EuroGeoSurveys, the European Federation of Geologists and the European Geothermal Energy Council, issued a joint press release as a reaction on the proposal tabled by the European Commission on 23/01/08 for a Directive on the promotion of the use of renewable energy sources.
This proposal is part of the ambitions Climate Action and Energy policy and legislative package published by the European Commission. It sets the framework to achieve the target of a 20% share of renewable energy sources in the final energy consumption by 2020. In effect the attainment of this target will require increase of the diverse renewable energy sources, including geothermal energy. Therefore our associations welcome the proposal tabled by the European Commission very much. In addition the Directive recognizes a need for renewable energy regulations. In opinion of our associations, the European regulations should be established without delay to standardize and promote procedures for geothermal energy development. Thus in order to facilitate implementation of the Directive it is necessary to clarify some definitions, especially the definition of geothermal energy. Furthermore the Directive must also include specific criteria for certification of shallow geothermal installers.
