From European Institutions :
The EURAXESS Portal is a one-stop shop for researchers seeking to advance their careers and personal development by moving to other countries. In addition to the information on training and jobs it provides, this electronic gateway is the entry point to a wealth of practical information on living, working and relaxing in the 35 European countries involved, through the widening network of national EURAXESS portals complementing it.
COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally-funded research on a European level. COST contributes to reducing the fragmentation in European research investments and opening the European Research Area to cooperation worldwide.
Research*eu is a European Union research magazine, written by independent professional journalists, which aims to broaden the democratic debate between science and society. It presents and analyses projects, results and initiatives through which men and women are making a contribution towards reinforcing and federating scientific and technological excellence in Europe. Published in English, French, German and Spanish, with ten issues per year, research*eu is edited by the Communication Unit of the European Commission’s DG Research.
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is a new initiative which aims to become a flagship for excellence in European innovation in order to face the challenges of globalisation. Although Europe already has excellent education and research institutions, their representatives are often isolated from the business world and do not obtain together the "critical mass" necessary for innovation. The EIT is the first European initiative to integrate fully the three sides of the "Knowledge Triangle" (Higher Education, Research, Business-Innovation) and will seek to stand out as a world-class innovation-orientated reference model, inspiring and driving change in existing education and research institutions.
The idea of a European Research Area grew out of the realisation that research in Europe suffers from three weaknesses: insufficient funding, lack of an environment to stimulate research and exploit results, and the fragmented nature of activities and the dispersal of resources.
The European Research Area has as its core message the need to overcome the traditional fragmentation of research efforts in the EU through better coordination and cooperation. In this regard, the recently launched Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6) introduced a specific programme "Integrating and Strengthening the European Research Area" from which a new initiative - the ERA-NET Scheme - will be financed. The ERA-NET Scheme is about the coordination and cooperation of national and regional programmes and as such, it aims at the national and regional programme makers and managers. These are, in most countries, either working in the Ministries or working in national funding agencies, which implement programmes on behalf of their governments. The ERA-NET Scheme will be implemented via an Open Call for proposals, welcoming proposals for coordination actions in any field of science and technology i.e. using a bottom-up approach.
